New Computer Address?

Hello,

Is there a way to give my computer a new address? I have had people breaking into my computer even though i have virus, spyware and adware protection. Please help! Thank you.

In general: simply changing the IP address of your computer will not help you, if your computer has security weaknesses. Hackers will discover your machine under a new address within minutes. There is no substitute for good protection.

I presume your anti-virus, spyware and adware products are up-to-date, and are from a reliable supplier?

Couple of pointers:

- if you donwload protection programs (such as anti-virus, firewall, or anti-spyware) from a shady source, chance are, they will do more harm than good

- if you install these products, but do not keep them up to date, their effect will be questionable after one week, and they will be useless after one month

- the best protection software cannot help you if you do not keep your operating system updated

- do you know which way the intruders use to hack into your computer? If you are being spied on while running wireless that's one thing, but if you have people trying to get into your computer while you leave it unattended, that's something else

- do you keep your password secret?

Here are a few steps I would take:

(1) Make sure your operating system is completely up to date. If you are using Windows 98, Windows 2000, or Windows ME, upgrade to XP. If you're having XP, make sure it's Service Pack 2. If you're having SP2, make sure your "Windows Update" comes back empty (i.e. all updates installed)
