are there any reliable (non-computer infecting) free or relatively cheap music downloaders? we used kazaa and limewire for a while but both killed our computer, even though we have the latest virus blocker and computer protection software.

Limewire has always been reliable for me personally. Either way, you might try Ares. I hear it works exceptionally well.
Ares is your best bet, you might want to try some Bit Torrent sites depending on what your looking for
bearshare has always been better for me than limewire of bittorrent.
Limewire does have problems. Bearshare has features it does not have, like access to the Bitzi database.
