Anti Virus/Spyware Protection for Windows Vista Basic?

What would be the best one to choose? I currently have Mcafee, but have had problems with it saying my subscription has run out twice since i got my pc last May. It shouldnt have. We paid for a 15 month subscription. Even Dell, who i bought it off confirm that we paid for 15 months. Has anyone else had a similar problem?? I see that you can get OneCare from Windows Live and that there are also free ones. Any advice welcome. I am pretty new to computers. Thanks Jo.

I have listed a few security applications that are available for download and are completely free: I will not get involved with the rights and wrongs of each package or their effectiveness, whatever you do, just make sure you have one of each type installed, updated and fully working:

This one below is awesome and has built in chat and video and sound.
Norton 360 is the best. I swear by it!
You can download AVG free. It is wonderful anti-virus software. Go to http://free.grisoft.com
I like to use AVG. They have a free version that works well as well. Just look up AVG free edition in google and you will find it.
looks like ive been beaten to it but id go with AVG free edition, i've not had a virus in the 4 years i've sued it across various PCs on various operating systems
avira antivir
Windows Live ONECare is what I use for my computers, and with the one which has Vista, just downloaded their Beta version which I find good.
I do not recommend any of the free products like AVG, as they are often buggy, and slow performance wise. For less than $50 you can get a professional, feature-rich program like Norton. A computer is like an automobile in that it needs regular maintenance, and Anti-spyware and Anti-virus programs provide you with this. I have a couple of recommendation's for you. Use the links at the end of this post for good starting places.

1. Download/buy a good anti-virus program such a Norton.

2. Download/buy a good Anti-spyware program. Windows Defender is free and quite useful and is available for download from the Microsoft website.
