I spent over an hour downloading the free virus protection program at www.aol.com and at the end, I got a confirmation that the anti-virus program had finished downloading. Yet when I used the free "active security monitor" also from www.aol.com, I was told that there was no anti-virus program detected. What happened?

Get avg free http://free.grisoft.com forget anything aol put out it won't be near as good.
ONLY get antvirus apps from their official home page.
Dont touch windows defender its rubbish and so is norton and trendmicro.
There is no-reason to buy and use NoAdware when there are freeware alternative like
Spybot Search and Destroy:

you haven't installed it that's the problem once you've downloaded the file you need to install it fined where you save it to during download and double click the file then follow the instructions to install it
