Unfortunately there's not enough space here to detail information needed to diagnose what is wrong. And if you could provide it, it would take a person with a great deal of computer knowledge to help you.

Commercially, she's looking at paying from $130 to $150 including the bench test, their coffee break and repair or replacement. The high school geek would probably do it for free...but.... I don't recommend.

She should call Best Buy Geek Squad http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?... and arrange to drop off the hard drive for testing, for viruses and hardware failure.

Computers 101 these guys learn how to pull personal files off first. There's something they're not sharing with her. It sounds like a virus. Formatting a hard drive will NOT guarantee getting rid of a virus. She needs a brand new unit. Thanks for the 10 points. cj. Report It
