OK, So almost all the DVDs I have are original- and the couple that aren't will be replaced if the originals are ever re-released.
Thing is- originals are copy protected, and now a new protection sceme seems to be working on the most recent.
I don't want to copy and re-sell. I don't want to share them on whatever the current file sharing thing is at the moment, I just want to put them on my MP4 player!
This is much easier to do if you are ripping from a copy.
Since the determined pirates are always going to find a way around copy protection, would it not make sense for the studios to release unprotected versions in the first place, or put an MP4 version on the disc that you can access using you computer.
This would mean consumers, such as myself, would not see originals as MP4 player-proof.
If we know we are not going to have difficulty making an original portable, we would be more likely to buy the original from a high street shop than a copy from the local pirate

I think the studios should have no copy protection but it would be better if they made the pricing of the originals reasonable so it is easier to afford them. This would cut down the number of pirates.
With the high prices and copy protection they are the cause of why there are pirates

i think people are working on locking certain codecs and in time they will beat the piraters for a time
