That's depends on your needs and how are you going to use it, the first thing is buy a computer with more than 1GB of RAM memory and a dual core processor brand doesn't matter AMD or INTEL they work both great. About the softwares virus, spyware protection is really important, also a good firewall, for working they are great free stuff out there like openoffice.org is like MS Office but is free of course it has is flaws but works great if you don't need to much work to be done.

AVG antivirus free edition.

Spybot S%26D Antispyware.

Ad-aware 2007 Antispyware. Doesn't matter having two at the same time.

Ccleaner. Registry cleaner (keeps your computer clean off useless files and registry).

Openoffice.org.

Media Monkey or Itunes both great jukebox player.

VLC media player (plays almost any type of media).

Try to get Nero is an excellent CD/DVD burning suite. But your computer should have one installed.
